SVI Forum: Cancer Prevention
May 23rd, 2011
Chaired for the thirteenth consecutive year by Sir Gustav Nossal AC CBE, this year's SVI forum was held on the 23rd of May in the Michael Chamberlain Lecture Theatre.
Speaking on the topic, 'Cancer Prevention' were A/Prof Jörg Heierhorst (SVI), Mr Todd Harper (CEO, Cancer Council Victoria), Mr Simon McKeon (Australian of the Year 2011) and Dr Clara Gaff (Genetics Counsellor and Principal Development Manager, Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre).
At least one-third of all cancer cases are preventable. Prevention offers the most cost-effective long-term strategy for the control of this disease, which kills more than 100,000 Australians each year. The speakers at the Forum discussed the effectiveness of social marketing and population based screening; psychosocial issues around genetic counseling; the economic impact of cancer and review some of the research going on in the field.
