Molecular and cellular basis of mammographic density in breast cancer

Project Type

PhD

Summary

Supervisors: Prof Erik Thompson, Dr. Izi Haviv (Baker IDI, Melbourne), A/Prof Lilian Soon (University of Sydney)

The studies to date have established a reliable and robust accrual system of tissue from breast mastectomy, integrating the surgeons, radiologists and pathologists with the laboratory team. Initial imaging and gene expression analyses of fresh breast tissue from breast mastectomy of high and low mammographic density (MD) have been performed, and continued refinement in the accrual methodology has allowed accurate sampling. Studies in bio-engineering chambers are planned to further elucidate stromal and epithelial contributions to MD, as are studies with high density collagen matrices.
