Bequests

What is a Bequest?

A bequest is a gift made under a Will. By leaving a bequest to SVI in your Will, you become a partner in our life-changing research, leaving a lasting legacy for the future.

How a bequest in your Will can help SVI

With little or no impact on your lifestyle today you can choose to include a bequest to SVI in your Will so that we can continue our critical work.

After you have made provisions for your family and loved ones there are different ways you can remember us:

  • A residuary bequest, where a donor bequeaths (gives) a portion of the donor’s residuary estate (i.e. what remains after all other gifts and costs have been paid); or
  • A specific bequest, where a donor bequeaths a specified sum or an asset such as shares, property, or works of art;
  • A pecuniary bequest, a sum of money.

The ‘residuary bequest’ is simply a gift of what is left of your estate after all your other gifts, taxes and debts have been fulfilled. As they are not specific amounts of money, this sort of bequest keeps its value regardless of inflation over the years.

It means the gift you include today is worth as much when the time comes to put it to work to give hope to those living with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, arthritis, osteoporosis or Alzheimer’s.

Making a Bequest to SVI

When you decide to make your Will, it is advisable to go to a solicitor for help.  They will help you leave clear instructions. If you have a Will, then you can easily add SVI through a short legal amendment to your existing Will (also known as a codicil).

Through your bequest you can specify a research area you wish your gift to support, or you can let SVI allocate the funds wherever it decides the need is greatest.

Bequests are managed through the SVI Foundation. If you are considering making a bequest to SVI we encourage you to contact our Donor Relations team (03) 9288 2480 to discuss your particular interests.  All inquiries are treated with discretion.
