Undergraduate SVI Summer Studentship Awards:
Why an SVI Vacation Studentship?
Undergraduate science students have the opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of research fields and to have training and hands-on experience in a range of laboratory techniques. This builds technical expertise, helps to shape future career choices and gives the student an opportunity to explore future study and work opportunities.
Summer studentships are full time for up to 6 weeks during the summer University vacation.
The studentship Award offers a stipend with a total value $1,500.
Who can apply?
Undergraduate Australian and international students enrolled in a relevant science degree at a Victorian University. Students at other Australian or New Zealand Universities may also be considered.
Due to the Australian tax laws for tax free stipends, the student must be enrolled at a University at the time of the placement, therefore a student is ineligible after completing 3rd year unless he/she is proceeding directly to an Honours year.
How long is the studentship and when can it be undertaken?
The studentship is up to a maximum of six (6) weeks during the summer vacation.
Actual commencement and completion dates may be negotiated with the individual Lab Head.
How much is the Award and how is it paid?
Studentship holders will receive $1,500 for the 6 week period, paid in two instalments of $750. This is exempt from income tax in accordance with ATO student scholarship guidelines, provided the student is enrolled at University at the time of placement.
How many studentships will be offered by SVI this year?
The number of studentships offered each year will vary in accordance with project and supervisor availability, funding and the calibre of applicants.
What supervision and assessment do I receive?
Summer students are supervised at all times by the Lab Head or a senior researcher delegated by the Lab Head. Full training will be provided in unfamiliar techniques and the variety of research processes.
Students are required to write a short report after their placement covering the work carried out in the project and the experience gained from the studentship.
The supervisor will provide a short written assessment of the student’s placement. This may be used for future employment or validation of technical exposures.
