Cardioprotection with mitochondrial fission protein DRP1 inhibitors

Mitochondrial shape change (fusion or fission) allows them to maintain their integrity and efficient bioenergetics of the organelle, as well as influencing cell survival. Enhanced mitochondrial fusion has been shown to promote survival of mammalian heart cells and protect from acute heart attack. This project aims to evaluate whether new drugs that regulate mitochondrial shape protect heart from infarction.
