Funding boost for innovative type 1 diabetes research

SVI’s Dr Seigmund Lai has been awarded the prestigious Breakthrough T1D – formerly JDRF – Postdoctoral Fellowship, valued at $400,000 over three years.

This fellowship is designed to support early-career scientists in advancing research in the type 1 diabetes field.

Dr Lai joins colleagues Dr Prerak Trivedi and Dr Matthew Lacorcia as recipients of the award.

Professor Tom Kay, SVI Director and Immunology Head, said:

“At SVI, our purpose is to make medical discoveries that transform lives – now and into the future. We’re proud of our up-and-coming stars like Seigmund, Prerak and Matthew, and we extend our gratitude to Breakthrough T1D for their ongoing support and encouragement.”

The project focuses on improving beta cell replacement therapy, a promising curative strategy for patients with type 1 diabetes.

Dr Lai is exploring strategies to protect transplanted cells and ensure their long-term survival and functionality. The study will also examine the interactions between the immune system and transplanted cells to gain deeper insights into the cause of transplant rejection.

Working alongside experts at SVI and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Dr Lai’s research could significantly improve islet transplantation programs and advance beta cell replacement therapy, offering improved outcomes for type 1 diabetes patients.
