SVI is proud to honour the life and legacy of Professor Helen Thomas, whose pioneering research in type 1 diabetes transformed the field.
A leading figure in medical research, Professor Thomas served as Associate Director of SVI and Head of the Islet Biology Lab. Her groundbreaking work deepened understanding of the autoimmune processes that destroy insulin-producing cells, paving the way for improved therapies.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Helen was a gifted mentor and collaborator, renowned for her generosity, vision and dedication to nurturing the next generation of scientists.
To commemorate her extraordinary contributions, the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS), together with Breakthrough T1D, Diabetes Victoria, and SVI, has announced the establishment of the Helen Thomas Early Career Fellowship in Type 1 Diabetes.
This new funding opportunity, valued at $80,000 for one year plus a $5,000 travel and conference allowance, will support an emerging researcher working to advance discoveries in type 1 diabetes.
The Fellowship stands as a powerful tribute to Helen’s lifelong commitment to both scientific excellence and the growth of young talent in the field.
Extending this tribute beyond the lab, SVI has unveiled a new mural dedicated to Helen, created by Melbourne artist Jason Parker.
The artwork captures her passion for both science and creativity, qualities that defined her approach to research. Parker’s vivid imagery evokes the balance of curiosity, persistence and compassion that Helen embodied.
Together, the Fellowship and mural ensure that Professor Helen Thomas’ legacy will continue to inspire future generations, fuelling discoveries, collaboration and hope for people living with type 1 diabetes.
