Anonymous gift bolsters Alzheimer’s research

An anonymous family foundation administered by Australian Communities Foundation (ACF) has generously given $26,000 for the purchase of integral technology for Alzheimer’s research.

Dr Emma van der Westhuizen and her team will use the technology to monitor the communication that happens within cells. The team is seeking to understand how small molecules stick to proteins in our cells, and the role this plays in Alzheimer’s disease.

The equipment comprises a nanodrop spectrophotometer and time-resolved fluorescence module. The technology will measure cell growth and amounts of DNA, RNA and protein used in experiments.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, and symptoms typically develop gradually over time. Its exact cause is not fully understood but is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

There is currently no cure, and treatment is focused on managing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease through medication, lifestyle changes, and cognitive and behavioural therapies.

Emma, who is also an SVI Rising Star Awardee, notes that the new technology plays an essential role in her mission to uncover the biological mechanisms that characterise Alzheimer’s.

“To try and develop a medication that slows down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease is my goal. Donations, whether for people, projects or, in this case, equipment, are extremely welcome.”
