Celebrating the impact of the Discovery Fund

SVI’s Discovery Fund stands as a testament to the power of philanthropy in driving groundbreaking medical research. Since its inception, the aim of the Fund has been to provide critical financial support to some of the brightest minds in medical science, helping to bridge gaps in funding and accelerate life-saving discoveries.

What began as a vision of Discovery Fund founder and Committee Chair, Christine Tarascio AM, to create a $5 million endowment has now, thanks to the generosity of Discovery Fund Members, surpassed $8 million. More than $2 million has been distributed to SVI researchers since 2021. These contributions have enabled the recruitment and support of exceptional scientists like Associate Professor Elaine Sanij, whose pioneering research in ovarian cancer and multiple myeloma is shaping new treatment approaches.

The Fund has also helped advance stroke research, prostate cancer studies, and computational biology breakthroughs through targeted fellowships and investments in cutting-edge technology. At the annual Discovery Fund lunch in August 2024, we were thrilled to announce the largest distribution to date, $1 million to further empower SVI’S world-class scientists.

This funding will continue to support key projects, including the work of Professor André La Gerche in cardiology and Associate Professor Davis McCarthy’s revolutionary big data research into breast cancer and lung disease. It will also fund essential infrastructure, ensuring that SVI remains at the forefront of medical innovation.

Their unwavering commitment and ongoing support is transforming lives, fostering medical breakthroughs, and securing the future of scientific research.
