InFocus: Boost for bone health, dementia advancements and more

We’re proud to launch the Spring 2025 edition of InFocus, which celebrates the people, ideas and discoveries that are shaping the future of medical research.

Philanthropy and community support remain at the heart of SVI’s progress. This edition features stories of generosity, from the Joan of Hearts Foundation’s impact on breast cancer research to international travel grants empowering early-career scientists.

Donors experienced first-hand how cutting-edge technology accelerates biomedical discovery at our annual Equipped for Impact event, also showcased in this edition.

Research highlights include Associate Professor Mark Chong’s innovative immunotherapy work and Dr Emma van der Westhuizen’s promising approach to tackling Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

Led by Associate Professor Andrew Deans, the Genome Stability Lab reports critical progress in understanding FANCM, a DNA repair protein, opening the door to new cancer treatments.

Together, these stories reflect the power of research, collaboration and philanthropy to transform lives.

The Spring InFocus is a celebration of the progress we are making and the partnerships that make it possible.
