In a spirited showdown against Melbourne’s medical research institute giants, WEHI and Peter Mac, the SVI Saints made history with their first-ever victory in the annual football tournament.
Despite early challenges forming a team – due to illness, injury, and departures from the institute – SVI rallied to field a squad of 25 players, representing roughly 10% of the institute. Notably, SVI once again led the way in gender balance, proudly fielding more women than either rival team.
Game 1: SVI vs WEHI
The day kicked off with a nail-biter against WEHI, who narrowly defeated SVI last year. This time, SVI came out strong, led by new recruits Luke Spencer (4 goals), Tom Elliot (1 goal), Oscar Cullen, Vince Tang, and Ben Turner. Captain Vince Tang set the tone with powerful centre clearances, while Kelli Schleibs – just months after giving birth –dominated in the air. Katherine Woods delivered relentless tackles, and Michael Sharp’s intercepts frustrated WEHI’s bench.
SVI led for most of the match, but WEHI surged late to take the lead with two minutes remaining. In a moment destined for SVI folklore, Luke Spencer snapped a goal on the run with just 15 seconds left, sealing a thrilling 5.1.31 to 4.5.29 win.
Game 2: WEHI vs Peter Mac
Peter Mac took the win in this match, but the highlight for SVI was the legendary barbecue prepared by Blessing and Ingrid – fuelling the team for their next challenge.
Game 3: SVI vs Peter Mac
Despite a long break and a playful warm-up involving ducks, gates, and Spiderman impressions, SVI faced a fresh and formidable Peter Mac side. Though outmatched, the Saints played with heart and humour, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and fun that defines SVI sport.
